Cancer Prevention Ideas

Vitamins:

B-Complex – Most people who supplement are relatively OK here, but if they are not or you are looking for a “better” supplement, try Source Naturals Co-enzymate B-Complex.

This is a sub-lingual. If you swallow it, it will be mostly wasted. These are mostly final-form b-vitamins, so that they don’t need to be converted in the liver.

B-12 is mentioned often in wholistic cancer literature. The most commonly encountered B-12 is actually a pre-cursor to B-12 which requires conversion to final-form B-12 in the liver. Cyano-cobalamin is this common form of B-12. It is the cobalamin base attached to a cyanide molecule. During the conversion process, the cyanide molecule is released into the liver. This is a form that I do not recommend in cancer patients, because their liver usually is compromised. In other people, I recommend against it because, even though they can probably convert it fairly well, I see no reason to introduce cyanide into their system.

Pernicious anemia is a common problem in older people who lose the ability to absorb the building blocks of B-12 from their food or to convert it to the final form in their liver. This is another category of person that should be taking the final-form B-12 as a sub-lingual.

Vitamin C – More is better. I take between 3 and 6 grams per day from supplements. I get mine from the Vitamin C Foundation. I get Cardio-C and take 1-2 scoops per day. This also contains L-Lysine and L-Proline in amounts optimal for preventing heart attacks, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, high cholesterol, and all other manifestations of plaque deposits in the arteries. This, along with vitamin E (discussed later) will reverse heart disease in addition to preventing it. Vitamin C has many more uses, but this covers the “deadly” one.

Vitamin C is also very useful as an antioxidant and for immune function. This puts it high on the list of nutrients to include to prevent cancer.

Vitamin C has a history of killing cancer in high doses in an IV. The function of vitamin C used in this manner is totally different from how it normally benefits you when used in the 1-10 gram/day dosages taken orally. Do not take vitamin C in the 50-100 gram dosages as an IV to prevent cancer.

If you take vitamin C for cancer-prevention purposes, take note of the chemical name. One common pH-neutralized forms of vitamin C is calcium-ascorbate. If you are taking calcium ascorbate orally on a daily basis, and you are taking more than a gram per day, you should calculate how much supplemental calcium you are taking in with the C.

1920’s medical school mnemonic for excessive calcium intake symptoms: moans, groans, stones, weak bones, and psychiatric overtones.

For higher dosages, the recommended form is pure ascorbic acid. This might be too acid for the stomach, and it might cause diarrhea, but these are self-limiting symptoms and easy to diagnose.

Vitamin D – This needs to be vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). D2 (ergocalciferol) is worthless. Dosages should vary with body weight color of skin, season of the year, and latitude of residence. In the winter months, I take about 2000 IUs per day. In the summer months (depending upon how much sun I am getting), I may drop the dose down to nothing. There used to be a lot of discussion about avoiding overdoses if you take more than 400 IU/day, but this is not usually enough, especially in higher latitudes and with people who spend most of their time inside or who have darker skin.

This is one of the most important common deficiencies. Vitamin D is very important in maintaining bones and teeth, but is also very important to the immune system and in cancer prevention. If you “overdose” you should notice pain at old bone/joint injury sites. If this happens, just skip a day or two and scale back a little on the dosage.

Vitamin E – It is a quirk of vitamin naming conventions that there are 8 different chemicals that are all called vitamin E. They have similarities, but they also do different things. To avoid vitamin E deficiency problems, you need a supplement with all 8 types. Check the back of the bottle and look for all 8 chemical names. There will be 4 tocopherols, and 4 tocotrienols. The tocotrienols (which are the least common type to be included in a supplement) are important in cancer prevention, and are critical in breast cancer prevention.

There have been a lot of medical journal articles on how high doses of vitamin E are “dangerous”. These are all either gross misinterpretations of the data or studies that were engineered to fail from the start. Many of these studies use dl-alpha tocopherol, which is the synthetic form of only one of the 8 vitamin E molecules. 7/8ths of dl-alpha tocopherol is plastic garbage and it is therefore predictable that studies done with this mostly useless chemical would produce results that dim enthusiasm for vitamin E. Many very positive vitamin E studies have been suppressed.

Minerals:

Potassium/Sodium Balance – Almost all foods that do not have table salt added to them have significantly more potassium than sodium. Potassium is easily available from food, and with good dietary choices, there is no need to supplement. Some people have taken the view that “salt (sodium)” is “bad” and occasionally the result is that their sodium/potassium balance goes wrong because they get too much potassium and not enough sodium. Sodium holds water, and potassium cycles fluids. Of course, a fundamental idea in cancer treatment/prevention is that toxins must be removed from the cells in a timely manner. Excesses of sodium will tend to hold the water in place, and prevent this process from proceeding efficiently. So, you can see why an emphasis on “cycling fluids” is important for this purpose.

If the balance swings too far towards potassium, you will urinate frequently with small volumes (but without prostate problems to account for this), have cold extremities, and have teeth that loose strength and crack. Too much sodium results in feeling “bloated”. The other symptoms are widely varying, because this can result in cellular edema, which stops cells from functioning. The cellular edema is significant predictor of cancer.

If you salt your food, never used refined salt. Also, just because a brand may indicate that it is “sea salt” doesn’t mean that it’s unrefined. Get either “Real Salt” – from Redmond Minerals, or Celtic Sea Salt. I like “Real Salt” because the oceans are getting more and more mercury from coal burning electricity generating plants in China and India. Therefore, I don’t trust anything that comes from the oceans.

Selenium – This is the most common mineral deficiency and the most important one too. A normal person should probably take between 100 and 200 mcg/day. If you have cancer, are HIV+, or have chronic Hep-C, Hep-B, or Coxsackie Virus, then you will need more. It is very difficult to get adequate selenium from food because acid rain tends to make it (and other minerals) unavailable to crops. You can get enough selenium if you eat brazil nuts, but I don’t like to recommend this because brazil nuts cause a lot of allergies, especially if eaten routinely over a long period of time. Too much selenium will cause inflammation around the cuticles, hair and fingernails to fall out, and a faint garlicky odor on the breath.

Selenium is probably the number one supplement to prevent cancer and a wide variety of viral infections. Where maps of selenium concentrations in the soil are unavailable in less-developed countries, cancer and AIDS maps are used as a surrogate because the three maps are virtually identical (within the boundaries of a given culture). This is less true in developed countries because so much more food is transported long distances.

Iodine – If you don’t eat fish (I recommend that you don’t because of the mercury) and you don’t use iodized salt (I recommend that you don’t because the only salt that is iodized is refined salt), and you don’t eat sea vegetables, then you will almost for sure be deficient in iodine. You can take kelp, or get lugol’s solution (1 drop / day). This is important for thyroid health, but it is also used by every cell in the body. Overdoses tend to cause nausea and loss of a desire to eat. Iodine is frequently used to treat cancer in wholistic circles, so it would be a useful cancer preventative, especially if your body temp tends to be low.

The thyroid needs iodine. A hypothyroid condition will result in low body temperature. Cancer LOVES low body temperatures. On of the more intriguing cancer cures of the early 20th century was “Coley’s Toxins”. Dr. Coley would infect the patient with erysipelas through the skin, and (if things went according to plan) the patient would get a strong fever. The cancer could not tolerate the fever and would quickly die out.

It is therefore obvious that the thyroid is and important gland to keep in good order if you want to prevent cancer. Feeding it iodine is not the only remedy, and it must be noted that iodine in an overdose causes problems.

Pancreatic Enzymes – Pancreatic enzymes treat/prevent cancer 3 different ways. First, they directly kill small cancer cell accumulations. Secondly, they help digest your food, which is particularly helpful to a cancer patient, because you can’t fight cancer without energy. The third way is that they help to metabolize various forms of “garbage” throughout your body. These enzymes are most useful to someone with a weak pancreas or a non-asian person who consumes a lot of grains.

Oxygen – Cancer HATES oxygen. Poorly oxygenated tissues have a much greater chance of developing cancer. Otto Warburg (double Nobel Prizewinner) discovered in the 1930’s/1940’s that cancer thrives in an oxygen-poor environment. Therefore, getting oxygen into the tissues, in proper, but not excessive concentrations, is always an effective strategy for cancer prevention. Here are some examples:

Sugar – Cancer LOVES glucose. It needs more glucose than almost any other cell in the body. Keeping blood sugar at the low end of the range will help prevent cancer. If you have cancer, it is even more important to keep blood sugar levels low.

Iron – Cancer LOVES iron. Unfortunately, if you starve the cancer of iron, you are also ruining your own red blood cells, and therefore your ability to carry OXYGEN to the cancerous tissues. Therefore, the strategy here is to make sure you don’t get a lot of excess iron.

Nitrilosides – AKA foods that contain vitamin B-17 or laetrile. This stuff is the proverbial hunter/killer of cancer cells. I always keep a bag of apricot seeds around. I take about a teaspoon per day. It is possible to kill yourself by taking very large doses of nitrilosides, but dosages that mimic historic consumption from food pose no threat and will attack the small cancers that are continually being created.

Detoxification Procedures - Cancer is essentially a disease of accumulated toxicity. When the toxic levels get high enough, they can cause changes in the DNA. Once this starts happening, cancer is one of the possible outcomes. Here are a few examples of detoxification procedures:

Enemas, Coffee Enemas, High Colonics

High fiber diet, herbal formulas to cleanse the colon

Fasting will help the liver cleanse itself. Water-only fasting and vegetable-juice fasting have a long history and are associated with good health.

Liver/gallbladder cleanses will help to clear out mineralized and waxy gallstones. This will prevent the liver/gallbladder/bile ducts from being congested.

Exercise moves lymph fluid. This is necessary for optimal detoxification.

Sweating – from exercise or saunas – helps to remove toxins from just under the skin.

Make friends with your favorite detoxifying supplement. My favorite is reduced L-glutathione. This is one of the optimal detoxifiers to have in your blood. The down side on this one is that stomach acid will break down most of it on the way there.

These directly cause cancer especially of the brain

Cancer Prevention For The Couch Potato

For those of you who are interested in cancer prevention, but will never take the time or spend the money to do it aggressively, I have compiled a short list of the easiest and most effective things to do:

Supplement with Selenium (between 100 and 200 mcg/day), Vitamin D3 (about 1000 IU/day in the winter, and about 200 IU/day in the summer), Vitamin E (all 4 tocopherols and all 4 tocotrienols) at a dosage of between 400 and 800 IU/day, Iodine (about 3 mg/day), and some source of omega-3 oils (about 1 tablespoon/day). Exercise one or two times per week enough to sweat significantly. Eat a teaspoon of apricot seeds per day. Never consume aspartame.
